Understand your estimate
How it works
Compare the cost of an electric blanket with the heating energy you enter for the same night. The result shows nightly and average monthly costs and their difference. It helps you compare a routine, rather than treating a blanket as a whole-room heating system.
Select the blanket setting and enter its power at that setting. Use the maker’s stated electrical input or a suitable measured average. Enter the hours used each night. For the heating comparison, enter purchased fuel energy for that night and its matching unit price. A low, medium or high setting does not have an assumed power multiplier.

Formula
Blanket energy per night = input watts at the selected setting ÷ 1000 × hours used. Heating cost per night = the entered metered heating fuel energy × its corresponding fuel price. Average monthly costs assume that routine every night. Blanket and room heating do not provide equivalent comfort or coverage.
Watts measure power; kilowatt-hours, written kWh, measure energy used over time. Divide watts by 1000 before multiplying by hours. Match the heating fuel price to the fuel energy you enter. Do not enter useful heat output as if it were purchased electricity or gas.
Electricity and fuel prices in pence or cents are divided by 100 to get pounds or dollars. The monthly figure repeats the entered nightly routine. It is an average based on that pattern, not a forecast of a winter bill. Changing the hours changes the blanket energy, while changing the setting label alone does not change the calculation.

Assumptions and limits
A blanket warms the person using it; room heating covers a different space. Lower entered cost does not mean the two choices give the same comfort or protect the room in the same way. The calculator does not decide how much room heating a household needs.
A maximum label rating and an average measured power are different. If the blanket cycles on and off, use evidence for the selected setting rather than assuming its maximum rating is drawn throughout the night. The tool does not guess a thermostat cycle or adjust for local weather.
Use heating energy for the intended comparison period. Whole-home daily energy may include hot water, cooking or other uses. Purchase costs and repairs are outside the running-cost result. Money is rounded for display; the working uses unrounded amounts. Blank personal values are never replaced with assumed blanket power or heating energy.
Country rules
Australian defaults use the actual flat electricity usage prices published for the AER DMO zones and the Victorian Default Offer, including GST. They are not annual reference bills divided by use. Other states and time-of-use plans need your bill prices. Existing daily supply charges are excluded from this extra running cost.
The heating comparison uses the fuel price you enter, including applicable tax. Use the same units as the energy field. Check the source dates for published electricity prices, and use your bill when the stored price does not match your plan. A dated source does not verify your blanket setting or nightly heating use.
When to ask a professional
Check the blanket for damage and follow the maker instructions. Unplug before bed unless its thermostat and instructions specifically allow overnight use. The cost result is not permission to use equipment for longer than the maker allows.
Ask the maker if the power at a setting or suitability for overnight use is unclear. Ask a qualified heating professional before making changes to the home’s heating system. Bring the blanket details, heating records and bills. They can check needs and equipment conditions that this energy comparison cannot assess.
Questions and answers
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Which figures should I enter? | Enter the blanket input watts at the selected setting and hours per night. For the heating comparison, enter the actual metered fuel energy per night and its corresponding price. |
| Are standing charges included? | Existing electricity supply and standing charges are excluded from incremental running costs. |
| Can I use prices from my bill? | Use actual bill or supplier quote prices, with the units shown on the form. Include applicable tax where requested, and keep unit prices separate from fixed charges. |
| What can this estimate tell me? | The result compares the entered energy costs. It does not establish equal performance, equipment suitability, installation safety or total ownership cost. |
