Appliance running costs United Kingdom
How Much Does a Dehumidifier Cost to Run?
A dehumidifier costs money while it draws electricity, so the useful starting point is its electrical input and actual running time. The size of the water tank or the extraction rating does not tell you the electricity bill.

What decides the running cost?
Multiply input watts by running hours, then divide by 1,000 to find kWh. Multiply kWh by the applicable electricity price. If a device cycles, use measured energy or a representative average input over the period. Multiplying a maximum rating by every hour may overstate normal use, while ignoring the fan or other operating modes may understate it.
The room conditions also matter when interpreting a manufacturer's specification. Meaco's published data, for example, reports different input powers at different temperature and humidity test points. Those figures describe that model and those conditions. They are not a generic compressor-dehumidifier wattage and do not establish how quickly laundry will dry in your home.
Cost per hour, day and month
Our original calculation scenario enters 200 W and eight running hours each day. It produces 0.2 kWh per running hour and 1.6 kWh per day. At the stored October to December 2026 GB Direct Debit reference price of 26.32p/kWh, daily electricity is £0.42112 before rounding.
The monthly figure in our calculator is an annual total divided by twelve. It therefore uses 365 days of the stated daily routine rather than a particular calendar month's length. This is an annualised illustration at a fixed price, not a forecast beyond the rate period. Standing charges are excluded from this additional appliance cost.
| Period | Energy | Electricity cost |
|---|---|---|
| One running hour | 0.2 kWh | £0.05 |
| One day | 1.6 kWh | £0.42 |
| Average month | 48.67 kWh | £12.81 |
| 365-day scenario | 584 kWh | £153.71 |
Compressor or desiccant?
Compare the documented electrical input and extraction performance for the conditions that matter to you. A power figure alone cannot show which machine removes a given amount of moisture with less energy. Temperature, humidity, target humidity, airflow and mode all need to be considered on a matching basis.
The calculator uses the watts you enter; selecting a type does not apply an assumed efficiency bonus or a hidden running-cost multiplier. If you are comparing two products, keep their test conditions with the estimate and enter a realistic duration for each. Where those durations are unknown, describe the result as a power-cost comparison rather than a completed drying comparison.
Is it worth running all the time?
Continuous operation is a choice about moisture control as well as price. Check what humidity you need to manage, whether the controls stop at the chosen target and why moisture is entering the space. A recurring damp problem can require ventilation, leak repairs or building work. An appliance-cost calculation cannot diagnose the cause.
Record the energy used over a representative day and the resulting room conditions. Compare that with a shorter schedule only when the room stays suitable. Turning a device off saves its electricity during that period, but it does not prove that the same moisture control is achieved. Follow the manual for clearances, drainage and unattended operation.
Running it on Economy 7
Use the separate day and night prices from your supplier and split the running hours correctly. A drying session can cross the meter window. Only the hours actually in the cheaper period receive that price. If the machine runs through the day as well, include those hours rather than pricing the entire session at the night rate.
The Ofgem multi-register reference is not a universal night tariff. For a household plan decision, also include the other electricity affected by the higher day rate and both standing charges. A cheaper dehumidifier session does not necessarily make Economy 7 the cheaper plan for the home.
Using it for laundry
For an original laundry scenario, enter measured dehumidifier energy for a complete load or multiply its average input by the time required. Compare that with the dryer's kWh for an equivalent load and dryness outcome. A manufacturer's litre-per-day extraction claim is not a ready-made laundry duration.
Our dedicated drying comparison blog post explains how to keep those boundaries consistent. Include any heated airer separately and do not count the same equipment twice. If you cannot match the load and endpoint, keep the figures as separate illustrative operating costs. A smaller number is not proof of faster drying or better moisture control.
Ways to reduce unnecessary cost
Check filters and airflow according to the instructions, use an appropriate target setting and keep track of how much the device actually runs. Address avoidable moisture sources and maintain effective ventilation rather than trying to solve every building issue by increasing operating hours. Official ventilation guidance is linked below.
Use your bill price when it differs from the regional reference and revisit the estimate when the tariff changes. Save the wattage basis, hours and measurement conditions with the result. That makes the estimate useful for comparing a future schedule without quietly changing the assumptions that produced the original figure.
